The Subtext is a monthly podcast focused primarily on playwrights, their process, and their journeys through the American theatre. On the surface The Subtext is an interview podcast. But if you give a few episodes a listen, you'll hear it is about a playwright investigating what it means to be a playwright, and how one cultivates a "career" in the American Theatre.
The Subtext is presented by American Theatre magazine, a publication of Theatre Communications Group. New episodes are released monthly. KJ Jarboe is The Subtext’s invaluable Associate Producer.

The Subtext was originally conceived by Brian James Polak and Dani Oliver and began as a program of LA Stage Alliance, a now defunct performing arts service organization based in Los Angeles. The podcast ran for 2 years through LA Stage, until the summer of 2017 when Brian moved from LA to Chicago. He spoke to some incredible playwrights in those days including Madhuri Shekar, Luis Alfaro, Carla Ching, John Pollono, Kemp Powers, Dan O’Brien, Zakiyyah Alexander, Larissa FastHorse, Sheila Callaghan, and many others. The episodes from 2015-2017 are now hosted on YouTube. You can listen to them at this link.
